Excise duty
Also called: excise · consumption tax
An internal tax on particular products such as alcohol, tobacco, energy products and sometimes sugary drinks, charged per unit of quantity, as a percentage, or both. On import it is collected by customs unless the goods move under an excise suspension arrangement to a tax warehouse.
In practice
Excise often exceeds the customs duty many times over, and goods subject to it usually need special licences, tax stamps or warehouse authorisations.
