Principal use

Also called: Additional US Rule of Interpretation 1(a) · use provisions

A rule of US tariff interpretation under which classification controlled by use is determined by the principal use in the US of goods of that class or kind at or immediately before the date of import, rather than by the use of the specific shipment. It is set out in the Additional US Rules of Interpretation.

In practice

Evidence of how a class of goods is generally used in the US, such as marketing and trade channels, is decisive for use-based headings.
