Customs debt

Also called: gümrük yükümlülüğü

The legal obligation to pay import or export duty on specific goods. It arises at the moment a declaration is accepted for release for free circulation or another procedure, or when obligations are breached, for example through unlawful introduction or removal from customs supervision. The law identifies the debtor and when the debt is extinguished.

In practice

A debt can arise from mistakes as well as from declarations, so breaches under special procedures can create duty liability for goods you never intended to import.
