Section 232 duties
Also called: Section 232 tariffs · national security tariffs
Additional US duties imposed under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 on imports found to threaten national security, notably steel, aluminium and their derivatives, and since 2025 also motor vehicles and parts, copper and other sectors. Some derivative products pay duty only on the metal content.
In practice
Section 232 often applies regardless of origin and to downstream products, so importers must check derivative lists and report steel or aluminium content correctly.
