Temporary importation under bond

Also called: TIB · entry type 23

A US procedure allowing certain categories of goods, such as samples, professional equipment and goods for repair or testing, to be imported without paying duty if they are exported within a set period. The importer posts a bond for an amount that can be claimed, generally twice the estimated duties, if the goods are not exported.

In practice

Failing to export TIB goods on time leads to liquidated damages under the bond, which usually exceed the duty saved.
